DAY 3

After digging some more into Reginald’s background, they find that he resigned from his previous jobs because he had stolen some valuables.

But the butler tell them he did steal some of the victim’s belongings but came back to the apartment that night to return them, thinking Jay had gone out. He then tells the detectives that Jay always played the same numbers for the lottery, yet none of those numbers are on his winning ticket which means Jay’s lottery ticket was actually stolen!

This explains why Jay felt so guilty about the money and wanted to give back, because the money wasn’t actually his!

The winning lottery ticket-which was actually stolen!
Back at the station, the team try and find the real owner of the ticket who is could also be the killer. Castle suggests looking at the numbers which are also the birth date of a neighbour of Jay named Hank Walters, who died the day his winning ticket was announced, and whom Jay bought a mausoleum for.

Hank’s only living relative is one Tom Walters, who the team brings in for questioning. They believe he killed Jay to get back the money that is rightfully his. But Tom tells them Hank had a ‘son,’ whose mum was Hank’s girlfriend for a while. This son’s birthday fits the last three numbers of the ticket and turns out to be Shawn York, who was previously bought in.

At first, Shawn denies knowing anything but after a while, tells the detectives the whole story; about how he discovered the money was stolen from his father so he went to see Jay, and Jay gave him his car out of guilt. But that wasn’t enough for Shawn so he went to Jay’s apartment to collect the whole amount, only Jay refused to give him the money as he thought Shawn would just waste it. The two struggled and the gun accidentally went off.
Shawn York was later arrested that day for first degree murder.
