DAY 4

The team now think Nick Johnston is the killer as it is confirmed he left work around 5 and came home around 7. Apparently he had seen Vivien the day she was murdered as witnesses confirmed a woman of Vivien’s description hanging around with Nick. The team theorise that Vivien must have worked out the affair and wanted to being Nick to justice that very day for killing Amelio.

Speaking to Nick later, they discover that he did go to Vivien’s office as she had called him and said she wanted to speak to him. Only when he got there, no one answered the door.

Nick did know about his wife’s affair and went to see Amelio to tell him to stop it, but Amelio said no, even though Nick threatened to tell Amelio’s wife.

Then Penny Marchand arrives, saying she knows who killed her mother. Penny says she had a dream last night where her mother was sitting at a table pointing at strange men and repeating: “Ask the Masons what happened.” Beckett is sceptical about this, but Castle thinks this could be a lead.

Beckett then turns her attention to the Carsillas mother and daughter though they have an alibi for that night as they were dining out at a fancy restaurant. Beckett is still suspicious and later finds out that the restaurant is close to Vivien’s office and that it is called Mason’s. Castle is excited as this means that Penny’s prediction is right. He begs Beckett to talk to the restaurant people.

Castle hands Beckett the restaurant card with Mason's written on it
Later the Carsillas ladies are called back in for questioning. Marina tells the team it was her idea to go visit Vivien for closure for her father and that night her mother wanted to try Mason’s as it was a brand new place. Marina says this place was so new they didn’t offer a wine selection, so her mother decided to go to the liquor store to buy some wine. She was gone about 20 minutes around 5:15pm.

But Beckett says this is a lie and produces a receipt from the store which states that Paula bought the wine at 3:12pm and at the same time she also bought a brand new ice pick.

Marina cannot believe this and asks why she would do it. Castle explains Paula killed Vivien to cover up Amelio’s death. Paula explains that Amelio told her about the affair, so she started slipping pills into her husband’s coffee every morning. When she and her daughter started seeing Vivien, Vivien knew things about them she shouldn’t.

That very night Vivien was going to commune with Amelio’s spirit and Paula Carsillas knew that her husband would tell Vivien how he was murdered. So she had to shut Vivien Marchand up for good. It must also have been she who wrote the letter about her death.

So Paula Carsillas was the killer.

DAY 3

The next day reality TV producer Cody Donnelly is brought in for questioning. He tells the team that after he went home, Vivien called him to bury the footage of her as it would be damaging. She said she would give him something better-a chance to film her put away another murderer. She had to put away one last suspicion first but the confrontation was going to happen that very night. So Cody prepared his equipment but got no answer from Vivien when he called her, most likely because she was already dead.

Detective Ryan arrives with news that the cab that took Vivien from her office took her to the apartment of one Toni Johnston, which is most likely the mysterious TJ marked on the victim’s calendar.

Toni is distraught and tells the team she had a secret affair with her husband’s boss and Vivien spoke to Toni about the affair, asking her about whether her husband had a temper and would ever hurt her because she said the spouse always knows. Beckett asks to speak to the man she had an affair with but Toni tells them he died four months ago. It turns out he is Amelio Carsillas, husband to Paula and father to Marina, whom the team already spoke to.

Beckett and Castle speak to Lanie who tells them that Amelio died in his office of heart failure caused quite possibly by a toxic overdose of some pills. Castle thinks that Toni’s husband must have found out about the affair and decided to do away with Amelio himself, before killing Vivien to shut her up.

DAY 2

The next day, the team is looking into the ‘Dirty Dozen,’ a list of people Vivien helped to put away, hoping to find someone who is out of prison and looking for revenge. The problem is that for most of these cases, it appears Vivien had exaggerated her part in them to make herself look better.

Detective Esposito then brings in a letter from Vivien herself marked the day she died. In the letter, she predicts her own death and mentions a man dressed in black, the numbers 7518, and a furious pounding sound. Beckett believes the killer faked the letter to throw them off, while Castle believes her psychic powers.

The team visit medical examiner Lanie who has finished doing an autopsy on the victim’s body. She puts the time of death between 5 and 7pm yesterday and cause of death as loss of blood and affixation. This rules out Albert as the possible killer.

Lanie also tells the team that the murder weapon (the ice pick) was brand new and that the victim tried calling someone on her cell before she died. The first numbers match her daughter’s number and are also the same numbers in her suicide note, which leads to a very excited Castle.

The murder weapon: A brand new ice pick
Meanwhile, Detective Ryan has discovered one criminal Vivien helped put away that has just recently been released from prison. Vivien had a vision of him killing his wife. This man Steve Adams, is on parole and his ankle bracelet GPS puts him in Vivien’s office area around yesterday afternoon from 1:36 to 2:48, which is right before the victim was murdered.

After being questioned, Steve tells Beckett and Castle that he wanted to expose Vivien for the fraud she was. Apparently, she had seen him and his girlfriend at a bar with her own eyes but told the police it was a psychic vision, leading to his capture as people believed the lie she told about his wife’s murder. So the day of Vivien’s murder, Steve and his friend Cody Donnelly (who had seen Vivien at the bar that night) stopped outside the victim’s office, waiting to catch her on camera. Steve called her a fake, but Vivien managed to get into a cab and drive off.

Later, it is discovered Steve’s GPS puts him at his apartment at 5pm, which shows he could not have murdered her. This also means that Vivien lied to her daughter about staying in her office all afternoon as she took a cab just before 3pm, supposedly to meet the mysterious TJ.

DAY 1

A maintenance worker at the scene said he saw a man leaving the victim’s office at 2:30 yesterday. A notation in the victim’s calendar was marked 3pm with the initials T.J. written under it.

Notation in calendar marked the day of the murder with 3pm and 'T.J.'
Detective Beckett spoke to the victim’s daughter Penny Marchand and asked whether there were any enemies if the victim. Penny replied that her mother was a good person, who had helped the police to put away over a dozen criminals over the past ten years by using her gift. Penny said she last spoke to her mother yesterday at 1pm and the victim was going to have her last clients of the day before relaxing with meditation.

A newspaper clip detailing the amazing work of the victim
The team bring in the victim’s last clients, a mother and daughter named Paula and Marina Casillas who tell them when they left her office, there was a man there waiting for Vivien. The victim seemed surprised at seeing him but she seemed to know him.

Paula and Marina also told the team how they had been seeing the victim for four months as a way to get closure as Paula’s husband Amelio had passed away. The victim had told them that she would commune with the husband’s spirit the previous night as she believed he had something important to tell his wife and daughter.

Later, the team manage to identify the strange man leaving the victim’s office as Albert Moreno, another of Vivien’s clients. The victim had told Albert he would be truly happy if he invested in a New Jersey Real Estate Deal, only the deal fell through and Albert lost everything. This is a big motive for murder.

Detective Beckett and Castle visit Albert Moreno, who tells them he did visit Vivien yesterday because he was very upset about going bankrupt and Vivien told him to let things sort themselves out. The victim also mentioned an appointment she was late for that was ‘uptown. So Albert left at 2:30 pm, only to meet his ex high school sweetheart and find love. Beckett is still not convinced he did not murder Vivien.
